Team Fortress 2
Public Game Group active 2 months agoTeam Fortress 2 is a team-based first-person shooter multiplayer video game developed by Valve Corporation. A sequel to Valve’s previous Team Fortress Classic, it was first released as part of the video game compilation The Orange Box on October 10, 2007 for Windows and the Xbox 360. A PlayStation 3 version then followed on November 22, 2007. The game was later released as a standalone package for Windows on April 9, 2008. Team Fortress 2 is distributed online through the Steam system, while retail distribution was handled by Electronic Arts. The development of Team Fortress 2 is led by John Cook and Robin Walker, the designers who originally created the Team Fortress modification for Quake in 1996.
The game was announced in 1998, powered by Valve’s GoldSrc engine, but has since been through various concepts and designs. In 1999, the game appeared to be deviating from its predecessors by pursuing a more realistic and militaristic style of gameplay, but the design metamorphosed over its nine-year development period. The final rendition sports cartoon style visuals influenced by the art of J. C. Leyendecker, Dean Cornwell and Norman Rockwell and is powered by the Source engine. The game itself revolves around two teams, each with access to nine distinct characters, battling in a variety of game modes set in evil genius environments.
The lack of information or apparent progress for six years of the game’s original development caused it to be labeled as vaporware, and it was regularly featured in Wired News’ annual vaporware list among other ignominies. Upon its release, the game received critical acclaim and several awards, being praised for its graphical style, balanced gameplay, comedic value and for its use of full character personalities in a dedicated multiplayer game. I used to love TF2 back when I had a solid group of people to play with but that all kind of collapsed a couple of years ago and, though sometimes I go back to it, it’s never the same.
If anyone’s got any suggestions for UK-based servers, (preferably with a small but active player-base), I’d be interested to find out.
@hudders We run two TF2 servers over at the Mothership (ie mefightclub.com), and though they’re both in America, we have members from everywhere, including a bunch from the UK, and even from here in Korea the ping isn’t enough to kill THE FUN.

TF2 was a fun game, but coming from CoD4 I found the lack of customization of classes frustrating and the cone of firing very annoying. Good game, just never got that into it, probably just because I never found a great place to play.

I’ve been playing TF2 since the Ye Olden Beta days, and it is if not my favorite game of all time at least it is at least a serious contender for the title. It’s a real testament to the Valve’s ongoing efforts that the game remains as entertaining today as the day it was released, despite the passage of time. I’m not entirely happy with all the changes, tweaks, and additions made to the game over the years, but on balance the game is better for it: I’m not sure we’d all still be playing if the game stayed stuck in 2007.
But then again, credit is also due to the players. One of the game’s strengths is that so many aspects of it are user-modifiable. Players have added new maps; changed existing maps; made new hats; made new weapons; made new game modes; made tools to make running servers easier; in short, Valve created a game in which modifying the game became, ahem, a game unto itself. And then took those modifications and incorporated them into the body of the ‘official’ game itself, for the good of all. As a game, TF2 is entertaining; as an example of a hybrid corporate/user approach to game design, it’s a fascinating case study.

A discussion page? It’s like we’ve got a forum inside the forum! Madness!
And on topic: I am enthused about this replay business, because TF2 lends itself to some fantastic moments. Insofar as the game is fun because it’s social, this adds a whole new dimension to its social-ness.
