Left 4 Dead 2

Left 4 Dead 2 is a cooperative first-person shooter game. It is the sequel to Valve Corporation’s award-winning Left 4 Dead. The game launched on November 17, 2009, for Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 in the United States and November 20 in Europe; in 2010, Left 4 Dead 2 was made available to the Steam client for Mac OS X. It builds upon the cooperatively-focused gameplay of the original and uses Valve’s proprietary Source engine, the same game engine used in Left 4 Dead. The game made its world premiere at E3 2009 with a trailer during the Microsoft press event.

Like the original, Left 4 Dead 2 is set during the aftermath of an apocalyptic pandemic, and focuses on four survivors fighting against hordes of the infected. The survivors must fight their way through levels, interspersed with safe houses that act as checkpoints, with the goal of reaching a rescue vehicle at the campaign’s finale. The gameplay is procedurally altered by an artificial intelligence engine dubbed the “Director” that monitors the players’ performance and adjust the scenario to provide a dynamic challenge. Several new features have been introduced: new types of infected, melee weapons, and a story-arc that connects the game’s five campaigns together.

When it was announced, it received a combination of positive and negative critical and community reactions. It also attracted an unusually high volume of pre-release controversy about the game’s graphic content. In response, alterations were made to the cover art and both Australia (due to having no R18+ rating) and Germany refused to rate the unmodified edition. [Wikipedia]

1 star2 stars3 stars4 stars5 starsWhen Left 4 Dead 2 is good, it’s great. Its cooperative campaigns take you and up to three other players through a varied series of locales in an experience than can be called (positively) ‘cinematic.’ Its competitive modes can be fraught with tension, balancing moments of terror (mobbed by zombies, nearby houses aflame, all three of your friends bleeding out on the ground around, you hunker into a corner and hope for the best) with moments of adrenaline-fueled glee (literally — stabbing yourself with a syringe, you make a run for a saferoom, shoving zombies out of your way. A car goes flying by you — you look behind: a tank! Mere moments later, you reach safety, slamming the door behind you. A horde outside growls). But when it’s bad, it’s frustratingly bad. Teams can be horribly unbalanced and hard to correct, which isn’t fun for anyone; many matches can take a long time to play, requiring up to an hour’s commitment. Either issue by itself would be no problem; both together, decidedly so.

I am, actually, apparently a mefightclub member because it was showing me some mfc servers in steam (though, at the time, none with any players, although perhaps that was because it was between matches?), but frankly I’m awful at the game (I didn’t end up tking any of my bot single player companions, but I shot them. a lot.) and would be too scared of letting my side down to play multi.

I’m pretty sure the server and/or game name had ”mfc” in the title. But I could be wrong. I do have an account over on mfc from way the hell back, I just don’t spend time there because I’m not big on online multiplayer stuff.

@juv3nal if you’re not already a Mefightclub member, you should sign up and hit the L4D2 thread there — we have a dedicated group on Steam with a hundred plus members, and do Realism Versus games (mostly) all the time!

I’m super late to the party on L4D2 having only picked it up on sale over the holiday and having just had a crack at the single player now, but it’s pretty good for some mindless zombie mowing even though I’m not generally a big shooter guy.

1 star2 stars3 stars4 stars5 starsLeft 4 Dead 2 ticked a lot of people off on release, only a year after L4D. However, they proved their point by making L4D2 an all around better game with greater moddability.

Much like TF2, Valve continues to support and update the game, giving it not only necessary bugfixes, but also new maps and gametypes to keep the experience fresh. If you’ve bought L4D2, you’re getting your money’s worth.

1 star2 stars3 stars4 stars5 starsL4D2 is probably the best zombie-shooting game on the market, and a definite improvement over the first game. It goes out of its way to force you to work with your teammates, making for a great co-op experience. However, the gameplay can sometimes get a bit repetitive, so if zombies aren’t your thing, it may be best in smaller doses.
