Straight White Male: The Lowest Difficulty Setting There Is
Imagine life here in the US — or indeed, pretty much anywhere in the Western world — is a massive role playing game, like World of Warcraft except appallingly mundane, where most quests involve the acquisition of money, cell phones and donuts, although not always at the same time.

I considered coming here just to post part 2 of the RPS Day Z thing. The vignette at the end was awesome. BUT GAMES CAN’T BE ART HURRRR

There’s also an uneasy feeling here, because once you start playing, you understand exactly why it has captured our imaginations. It makes you wonder why it took this long to happen. It’s almost too obvious. And consequently this is already the most intense, evocative, and interesting game I’ve played in 2012. If this year can offer [...]

Is the greatest zombie-themed game ever a mod? Rockpapershotgun, PCGamer and Kotaku think it just might be. Day Zero is a an open-world co-op permadeath zombie survival game set in the 235 square kilometer world of Arma 2. A comprehensive primer is available on the Something Awful forums (membership may be required for that link), and you can grab a copy of the work in progress here.

That was pretty fun, and a really unique idea. I’d love to see more levels, or an expanded version with way more words available.

I felt the same shock of cognitive dissonance upon first seeing EA’s marketing department’s choice of bundle naming, but I find the counter-arguments pretty compelling: arem for example, Braid and Fez to be excluded from the ‘indie’ side of the venn diagram because they were published by Microsoft?

Notch of Minecraft fame says “EA releases an ‘indie bundle‘? That’s not how that works, EA. Stop attempting to ruin everything, you bunch of cynical bastards. Indies are saving gaming. EA is methodically destroying it. The games in the bundle are good, I’m not questioning them. I’m questioning EA” on Twitter.

I had my own reaction to Blow here.
In a way the most interesting entries in Brainy Gamer’s list are those where someone tries to justify a ‘dumb’ game. They’re not always convincing, but I think it shows that these games touch people somehow. Which is art, after all.

Seems like he lacks self-awareness or this is some sort self-promotion by appeal to elitism. “Most games are dumb – not dumb by the gold standard of media dumbness but worse! Buy my games.” Puerile and excruciatingly serious sound like apt descriptors of Blow’s comments here and they don’t even have the shimmer of joyfully vicarious role fulfillment [...]

Here’s a follow-up/clarification by Taylor Clark. I have to say I’m not convinced, and I suspect he’s got some fairly ironic blinders on: he acknowledges that not all games are dumb, but it looks like he hasn’t come to the realization that the ‘dumb’ games are the ones that he, himself, is compelled to play all [...]
