GOG.com updates their privacy policy… for the better!

It's a rare thing when a company's privacy policy change isn't some further encroachment on your privacy. GOG.com has updated theirs and will no longer be using Geo-IP to determine its customers' regions, relying instead on self-reporting.

Reports that this change has anything to do with the upcoming release of The Witcher 2, which will be censored in Australia, are simply not credible.

  1. I don’t use GOG myself, but I most assuredly approve of the principle. Makes up a bit for their boneheaded ‘we’re shutting down… PSYCH NO WE’RE NOT’ marketing misfire a while back.

  2. GOG is actually a pretty great service, bone-headed marketing gimmicks aside. For instance, they do a better job than Steam at integrating ephemera into purchases — pre-cropped user avatars, manuals, maps, soundtracks are all listed alongside the main game files to download, rather than being (as with Steam) shunted aside to some odd folder inside the SteamApps directory.
