I HAVE SHIT TO PAY FOR

Think you have a pretty good read on where video game consumers are spending their money? Perhaps it's time to reassess: The game could be a fad but if it remains popular, it could net Kardashian $85 million this year and according to Gamasutra, Cowen Research estimates the game will generate roughly $225M in revenue for Glu's 2014 fiscal year. Developer Glu Mobile's stock has soared to it's highest point since 2007 and the game has a rather enthusiastic fanbase that was vehemently upset when the game servers ran into problems over the weekend.

Philippa Warr and Cara Ellison discuss the game a bit on the Not a Game podcast (starting at around 20:18)

  1. I can hardly believe I made a post about that, but I do think it’s interesting in that whether it’s going on about about brotastic shooters or arty indie games or something in between, the games site/blog news cycle rarely touches on a segment of the market which is clearly capable of shifting a ton of money.

  2. If only there was some way to redirect their intense interest in this game’s theming to the underlying mechanics and thus grow the audience for gaming instead of merely being yet another capitalist investment opportunity for licensed digital merch for the sort of people satisfied with pocket LCD slot machine games and Klondike.

Really hoping Joel McHale mentions this on The Soup this week…
