1. Didn’t get a chance to read it all yet but damn if this isn’t a fine rant.

  2. This leads to a natural question: why isn’t violence against men ever used as the impetus for a game story? Well, because no one fucking cares about violence against men, really. When a woman gets hurt in a game, it’s a fully-rendered cutscene, complete with sad voice acting and dramatic music and everything; when a man gets hurt in a game, it’s called the entire fucking game.

I’d copy and paste this whole damn article if I could, but that entire third section is pretty boss. Breath of fresh air this is. Of course, if I had written it as a guy it would have a decidedly different reception… and as the author points out, that’s kind of fucked up.

  3. Leigh Alexander recently on related matters

Our lead characters have to be hard, and while we accept a male hero with a five o’clock shadow and a bad attitude generally unquestioned, a woman seems to need a reason to be hard. Something had to have been done to her.

It seems that when you want to make a woman into a hero, you hurt her first. When you want to make a man into a hero, you hurt… also a woman first.

  4. Leigh seems to put it better than most I’ve read but still most of her(?) points fall under scrutiny in Karen’s blog. Not just the post linked above either. Seriously it’s like taking a shower after having followed a few of these discussions.

Leigh also loses every mark from me for spoiling something from the second season of the walking dead (game). damnit.
