MMMMMM is VVVVVV + || || || || || ||

MMMMMM is Increpare's extra-puzzly reconfiguration of Terry Cavanagh's gravity platformer VVVVVV. If you play one game today in your web browser, I highly recommend it be this one.

(Time and space is quantized here, so if you happen to be turned off by some of VVVVVV‘s twitch-based play — or just think you might not be up for it on a weekend morning — this one sidesteps the issue.)

  1. I think this one is actually harder than VVVVVV. The weird angle stuff is hard for me to wrap my brain around, and I never seem to slide the way that I’m expecting. I mean, if I stop and think about it slowly, I do get how the angled stuff is supposed to work (I think). I just can’t do it while actually playing, and the third room pretty much got me stuck.

  2. A version where the screen rotates to match the current gravity direction might make things a bit more intuitive. (As it is, the ‘stars’ in the background are always moving in the fall-direction).

    There were definitely a few spots I handled by trial and error, going through all possible move permutations until stumbling upon what I was missing.

  3. VVVVVV made me Very Angry. I will try this, but I don’t like me when I’m angry. ;-)

  4. Oh no! This one is a lot more puzzle and a lot less reflex, in case it was the twitch-reflex parts that made you angry at VVVVVV, but there’s still a good chance you won’t like this if you didn’t like that.

    Personally, I think VVVVVV is such a great game. Now I’m curious what sort of platformers you have liked.

  5. Well, I’m not really a platformer person, so that’s a tough question to answer. I used to enjoy platformers back in the day, in the arcades, with proper controllers, but since then: honestly, I couldn’t give a favorite in the genre, not having played many of them for more than enough time to realize I wasn’t having fun. Hell, I even hated Braid, which I realize brands me a heretic and apostate.

    Is Trials 2 a platformer? That captivated me for a while a couple years back ;-)
