1. Ouch:

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was a movie directed by a man whose sole experience of directing was in video game cut-scenes, the 45-second CGI money-shots that brought the rudimentary sprites used in gameplay to life. No animated movie before or after its release has lost more money at the box office

  2. nobody said : No animated movie before or after its release has lost more money at the box office

I remember watching this in the theater. It was…not terrible? Not particularly good, either; half the reason to see it seemed to be for the tech, and I wonder if selling it that way cost it some viewers. “Watch this good movie!” is more compelling to me than “check out this novelty film!”

  3. I own Spirits Within on DVD, cause I’m a bit of a Final Fantasy fanboy. And the animation really is gorgeous; I remember being quite impressed by it in the theater. But the script itself suffers from all the worst parts of Final Fantasy plots, combined with some movie cliches, without enough of the bits that make the games so fun. So yeah. It’s not a bad movie, so much as it is a stunningly average one. That, combined with the “video game movie” stigma was just too much for it.
