EA’s NHL 2012 to include female players

Sports games just got a bit more inclusive. EA's NHL 2012 will allow for players to create female as well as male custom players. (Globe and Mail article, Yahoo article).

This change was brought about by a letter written to EA Executives by 14-year-old Buffalo, NY resident Lexi Peters who was frustrated she could not create a female player in EA’s NHL series of games. David Littman, lead producer of the game called her letter “a wake-up call” and convinced the NHL to authorize the change. Sometimes it takes a child to point out the absolutely obvious.

  1. This is good, though somehow I still cannot quite get my head around having to go to the NHL’s lawyers to approve it. I mean, intellectually, I get how the licensing agreement probably requires many significant aspects of the game design to be approved, including this one. But somehow it still seems weird… like there’s a possibility they might have said “no”? (Which sadly, there probably *is*.)

  2. Fantastic and long over-due.
